When most people move into a new home, they want to immediately change the flooring. It is rare to find a home with carpeting that is perfect for your needs, or floors that are in perfect shape.

One of the most common questions new homeowners face is whether to install carpet or go with hardwood floors. Each has its own attraction and each has its own downsides.

Benefits of Hardwood

Hardwood flooring is a natural and classic approach to interior design which never seems to go out of style. It has many benefits, including that it is longer-lasting. When it begins to scuff or scratch, it can always be refinished.

If your family is very active or you have pets, it can help to hide wear and tear. It is renewable, sustainable and green. If anyone in your home has allergies, you could not ask for a more hypoallergenic material.

Drawbacks of Hardwood

Hardwood is difficult and complex to install when compared to carpet. It must be secured into place using glue, nails or something similar. It can be very hard on your feet.

Hardwood is often combined with area rugs to provide not only padding, but to place under furniture to avoid expensive gouges in the material. Finally, hardwood does not help with insulation; this can result in a colder home or higher heating bills.

Benefits of Carpet

Carpet is an easy and quick to install. It requires only an empty room and cutting tools to lay it. While some carpeting is glued or nailed down, this is rarely a necessary step.

If carpeting is well-cared for, it can last a long time. Carpets come in a wide variety of patterns, textures and colors to match any sense of aesthetics or taste. It also provides padding that makes it easier on your feet and helps keep your home warm in the colder months.

Green carpeting options exist now, which do not exude volatile organic compounds into the air. Some carpeting is made with recycled materials. In this sense, carpeting can be as green as, if not more than, hardwood. Hardwoods are often varnished or stained using materials that are not environmentally friendly.

Drawbacks of Carpet

Carpet requires more care than hardwood. You will need to steam clean the carpet at least annually and vacuum weekly, to keep it in tip top shape. It will stain and show wear and tear far more quickly than hardwood.

Both carpet and hardwood carry many benefits and drawbacks. In the end, you must choose which material is right for your wants and needs.

The holiday season is upon us once more, and with the holidays come the lights, fun and festivals. Part of the tradition in our region is the appearance of the Canadian Pacific Holiday Train.

Leduc is excited to once more be a stop on the route of this massive annual undertaking. The train is an attraction all across Canada and the northern United States, visiting over 150 cities and towns along its way. It is a sight not to be missed.

What the Train Is

If you have never seen the CP Holiday Train, you are missing out on something very special. The train serves as one of the largest fundraising operations in North America, and the largest food bank fundraiser.

At each stop, the train features spectacle and entertainment, and seeks to collect food and cash donations for local food banks in each community that it visits. Over the years, the train has become wildly successful and is a must-visit attraction throughout the region.

Manned at each location by a group of dedicated volunteers, the Holiday Train has been hugely successful in raising awareness of hunger in our communities. The program has been going on for fifteen years running. It lasts for three weeks from the end of November until just before Christmas.

The train features a brightly lit and festive exterior, making it something to behold even if one just watches it pull into the station. It also includes a variety of entertainment options, including a stage featuring musicians that will play free concerts of holiday favorites.

The celebratory atmosphere is completely free, though food bank donations of non-perishable food items or cash are encouraged.

Entertainers this year on the Canadian Train include Roxanne Potvin, Odds, Jim Cuddy and Tracey Brown, each of whom will deliver an impressive array of classic and modern holiday music.

The train launches in Quebec on November 26th, and runs all the way through December 16th in the northern United States. It is scheduled to hit Alberta on December 6th and will reach Leduc on December 8th.  Performances scheduled behind the No Frills Store on 50 Avenue at 8:15 PM. Performing in our community will be Odds and Roxanne Potvin.

If you have recently purchased real estate in the area or are working with your Leduc Remax agent to buy a home here, you have picked a great time to relocate to this area! If you have not yet begun your search, but are ready to purchase a new Alberta home, give us a call today. There is no time like the present!
